Kevin Campbell makes bold statement on Unai Emery's sacking and a big decision ahead for Arsenal

Kevin Campbell believes the decision over Arsenal's next head coach will show the fans how serious the Gunners are in terms of the direction of the club.

The Gunners are on the lookout for a new head coach after parting company with Unai Emery on Friday morning.

Emery’s final game in charge saw his side suffer a 2-1 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League on Thursday night, leaving the Gunners winless in seven games.

And Campbell believes that one of Emery’s biggest problems at the club was that he didn’t know his best  XI.

“My reaction is that I am very happy,” Campbell told Sky Sports. “I am very happy that they have actually done something but the key to this is there is a second part that must happen.

“The person they appoint is going to be key to this football club moving forward. They have taken care of business in one way, but who they appoint now and have much they back him will tell all the Arsenal fans how serious they are as a board.

“I don’t think he actually knew what his best XI was. He has been at the club for 18 months and he didn’t know what his best team was.

“He was probably a little bit too defensive if I am honest with you. He tried to impose a playing style press when he first came into the club. Then he moved away from that and developed a move tinker man style which was never going to work.

“I don’t think the players bought into it fully. Now the club have been regressing that is why he has lost his job.”

A number of names have already been linked to the role, but for Campbell it has to be either Max Allegri or Mauricio Pochettino next for the Gunners.

“Look there is a load of good managers out there,” the former forward added.

“Before Unai Emery was anywhere near the job I wanted Max Allegri in. I still think Max Allegri is one of the elite level coaches that could turn the Arsenal ship around.

“Obviously we know Mauricio Pochettino is available now and obviously we know there are questions marks over what he has won. But one thing we do know is that he is a very good coach and manager.

“He can get some real structure into Arsenal because that is really what we lack. There are other managers in jobs at the moment who there is no point even mentioning.

“But those are the two who can do this job and do it well.”
