Kesha says she ‘almost died’ after complications from egg-freezing and autoimmune disorder

Singer Kesha revealed she “almost died in January,” sharing details about her recent health problems in an interview with SELF Magazine, released Tuesday.

The incident reportedly occurred after an egg-freezing procedure the singer underwent at the end of 2022. Kesha was in the Bahamas for a New Year’s Eve show and reported feeling unusually weak after the performance.

Hospital tests would later reveal the 36-year-old singer was experiencing complications from freezing her eggs several weeks prior. Without revealing too many details, the star claimed she was transferred to a separate hospital in Miami, where she remained for over a week.

“I finally feel recovered, but it took a couple months,” she said. “It was horrifying.”

Kesha went on to explain that the complications were due, in part, to an autoimmune disorder she was diagnosed with in 2022.

Her condition, known as Common Variable Immunodeficiency, is described by the Mayo Clinic as “an immune system disorder that causes you to have low levels of the proteins that help fight infections.”

It can also lead to “repeated infections in your ears, sinuses and respiratory system” and “increased risk of digestive disorders, autoimmune disorders, blood disorders and cancer,” according to the clinic.

During the interview, Kesha also discussed her initial hesitation in sharing the diagnosis publicly.

“I just never wanted to be the whiny, privileged girl,” the singer said. “Also, my image had been that of going out and having fun.”

She added that she had some difficulty in caring for herself before the incident, and felt exhausted trying to keep up with interviews, photo shoots and everything else that came with her fame.

“I learned after my diagnosis that sleep is the most important thing,” Kesha said. “I took that for granted for, God, about 29, 30 years.”

“I feel like I’m just playing catch-up on my teens and 20s, still,” she added. “But I try to get as much sleep as possible, and I have to protect that fiercely.”
