Kesha 'almost died' having her eggs frozen after 'horrifying' complication from procedure

Kesha has revealed that she "almost died" while having her eggs frozen in a "horrifying" medical incident earlier this year.

The 36-year-old TiK ToK singer, who shot to fame in the late noughties, decided to freeze her eggs last year because she wanted to take her reproductive health "into her own hands".

In a new interview, the Los Angeles-born singer-songwriter - who is currently promoting new album Gag Order - has told of how she "almost died in January".

After performing in the Bahamas on New Year's Eve, the singer found that she was too weak to walk and was then taken to hospital following a medical procedure to freeze her eggs.

Kesha was hospitalised for nine days as a result of developing an uncommon yet serious complication from the fertility procedure, with her recovery taking a couple of months.

Doctors found that the complication was due to her weakened immune system, which is because of Common Variable Immunodeficiency (CVID), a primary immune deficiency disease in which she suffers and was diagnosed with in 2022.

According to Mayo Clinic, CVID is an immune system disorder that "causes you to have low levels of the proteins that help fight infections".

The site also states: "If you have CVID, you'll likely have repeated infections in your ears, sinuses and respiratory system."

With them added that there is also an increased risk of digestive disorders, autoimmune disorders, blood disorders and other issues.

In a person without CVID, the side effects of having the procedure to freeze your eggs are characterised as hormonal fluctuations caused by the medication, with them similar to PMS symptoms.

Symptoms that can be experienced after undergoing the procedure are: headaches, mood swings, insomnia, hot or cold flashes, breast tenderness, bloating, or mild fluid retention.

What Kesha endured is rare in women, with one in four experiencing side effects, according to a 2017 Grazia report.

The singer spoke of the "horrifying" ordeal in her latest interview with SELF, which was published on June 20.

"I almost died in January," she explained.

"I finally feel recovered, but it took a couple months. It was horrifying," she added.

"I just was taking my reproductive health into my own hands. And I stand by everyone doing that and [honoring] your body.

"Everyone probably has some semblance of feeling like you share what you’re going through, and, at the same time, it’s almost inviting people to have an opinion about it. I don’t have that perfectly mapped out," she concluded on the topic.
