Kesgrave shooting: Police recover 'long-barrelled gun' after 15-year-old shot on way to school

A "long-barrelled gun" has been recovered by police after a 15-year-old boy was shot on his way to school in Ipswich.

Officers were called to Friends Walk in Kesgrave, Suffolk, around half a mile from Kesgrave High School, just after 8.40am on Monday.

The Year 11 pupil sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, where he remains in a critical condition.

Suffolk Police confirmed on Tuesday that officers have recovered a "long-barrelled gun" during their investigation.

Another 15-year-old boy was arrested by armed police on suspicion of attempted murder in Westwood Avenue, Ipswich, a few miles from the shooting scene. He remains in custody.

Police are not looking for anyone else in connection with the shooting.

Superintendent Kerry Cutler said: "We have arrested an individual that we believe is involved in the incident and we also recovered a weapon.

"Everybody is shocked, Kesgrave is on the outskirts of Ipswich, it is almost a semi-rural area, it's very much a residential area, this is not something we've seen in that area before and people will be impacted by it.

Extra officers have been drafted in to patrol the area around the school (PA)

"The investigation goes on and we're still appealing for anybody who saw anything or has any information to come forward."

Friends Walk and Through Jollys in the Grange Farm estate remain cordoned off and there is also a partial closure on Ropes Drive as forensic teams investigate.

A temporary police station has been set up in Kesgrave and extra officers are on patrol around the school.

Kesgrave High school said the shooting is being treated as an "isolated incident" by police.
