Kerry Washington and Nnamdi Asomugha attend couples therapy

Couple Nnamdi Asomugha and Kerry Washington

Kerry Washington and her husband Nnamdi Asomugha started attending couples therapy "before anything was wrong".

The sessions have enabled the couple to openly communicate so that they can tackle challenges more effectively.

Appearing on a recent episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast, host Alex Cooper, 31, asked actress Kerry: "What has your partnership taught you about yourself?"

The Shadow Force star replied: "I'm really lucky. Oh, God, he teaches me stuff all the time."

Kerry, 49, then revealed that she and 44-year-old actor Nnamdi - who got married during a private ceremony in Hailey, Idaho, in June 2013 - are committed to couples therapy.

The star continued: "One of the things that I really love about our relationship is that very early on, we started couples therapy. Like, we started couples therapy before anything was wrong, kind of preventatively.

"He was newer to therapy, I feel like I've been in therapy my whole life, but we were like, 'We should just start having these conversations so that if something does get hard, we already have a culture of knowing how to talk about stuff."

Kerry is "obsessed" with the practice.

The Scandal alum explained: "It's my favourite. It's like part logistics meeting, part party, part date in the afternoon. I so look forward to it.

"We start every session with something that the other person did well, like something that we appreciate about the other person. And every time I’m like, ‘This is the best part of my week.'

"What's really interesting is so often the thing he shares with me, that he appreciated, or the thing I share with him, it's not something I would have guessed. It's like something that, to me, was small, but to him, it meant a lot.

"And that's so useful because now I'm like, 'Oh, I can do that again! I can do that all the time.' So you really learn how to love each other better by starting with something good."

Ultimately, Kerry said the Sylvie's Love cast member has "taught me just how to be a better person".

The Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery actress continued: "And he's given me the greatest gift, which is his partnership, and also to be a mom."

Kerry and former NFL cornerback player Nnamdi have three children together, a daughter named Isabelle, 11, and a nine-year-old son called Caleb.

She is also stepmom to his teenage stepdaughter - whose name has never been publicly revealed - from a previous relationship.
