Kerry Katona breaks down on Loose Women as she discusses ex-husband's death for the first time

Kerry Katona made scathing comments against her ex-husband as she discussed his death on TV for the first time.

The former Atomic Kitten star appeared on Loose Women and spoke about her late husband George Kay who died in July at the age of 39.

Kerry , who shared daughter Dylan-Jorge with her ex, said that she was "angry that he left his baby girl" but hit out that "he's better off where he is."

She told the ITV panel: "He gave me hell when he was alive. He's better off where he is. He was so unhappy on this earth.

"He had so many demons, so many issues, we thought when DJ was born he'd change his ways, he had chance after chance. He was never going to change, never going to change."

Kerry was tearful as she discussed George Kay's death on TV for the first time (ITV)

George died following a suspected overdose after concerned Holiday Inn staff called Cheshire Police and North West Ambulance Service to the venue in Wood Lane, Sutton Weaver, in Runcorn.

"I left George because of what he was doing," Kerry said after commenting that his alleged drug use made her feel "worthless".

The 39-year-old continued: "I didn't make him do anything he didn't want to do. I won't be blamed for his death."

She added: "He [George] didn't take his life. It was an accidental overdose. George was too vain to kill himself.

"George had very many issues. By the time I'd worked all these issues out, I was already madly in love with him, we had a baby on the way.

"We'd known each other since we were 14. I always fancied him, he always fancied me. When the violence started, it's almost like you’re being groomed. Everyone says, 'Why didn't you walk away?'"

Kerry also tearfully spoke about the guilt she felt at not letting her former partner see his child for a period of time - but made the shocking claim that she or her daughter "would be dead" if she stayed in the relationship.

"I feel guilty DJ didn't get to see her dad for a year," the singer said.

"I'd hand DJ over to her dad, and I would fear I wouldn't get her back. He would spit in my face and DJ would start to spit in my face.

"I know if I'd have stayed with George I'd be dead. I know it 100 per cent. Or DJ would."

A spokesman for Cheshire Police said at the time of George's death: "At 9.54pm on Friday, July 5, police received a report of concern for the safety of a 39-year-old man at a hotel on Wood Lane, Sutton Weaver.

"Officers attended and spoke to the man, as well as hotel staff. All parties agreed that he could remain at the hotel. At 10.11am on Saturday, July 6, police received a further report of concern for the man's safety.

"Due to the information provided the caller was advised to contact North West Ambulance Service for assistance.

"The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner. As with any death following police contact, Cheshire Constabulary has referred the matter to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

"Paramedics attended the hotel and the man was taken to Warrington General Hospital for treatment, where he sadly later died."

Loose Women airs weekdays at 12:30pm on ITV.
