Kerry GAA in mourning following death of 'true gent' Derek Twomey

Kerry GAA is in mourning following the untimely death of Killarney Legion player Derek Twomey.

Tributes have been pouring in after Derek's death on Wednesday, aged 31.

In a statement, Killarney Legion said they were "shocked and saddened" at the sad news after Derek passed away after taking ill at work.

The statement added: "Derek and his family have been involved with the Legion for many years and are hugely respected within the club.

"An accomplished and determined footballer, Derek was a regular and influential player at all grades and a very valued member of the senior panel.

"A fantastic footballer and character, his presence around the club will be missed beyond words."

Kerry GAA posted on Facebook: "We are very saddened to hear this dreadful news.

"Our deepest sympathies to Derek’s family and club-mates at Killarney Legion GAA Club.

"May Derek Rest in Peace."

A number of other clubs paid their respects following Derek's death.

Listry GAA tweeted: "Deepest condolences to The Twomey family and Killarney Legion GAA Club on the untimely death of Derek RIP."

Firies added: "Our condolences to the Twomey family and to all @LegionGAA on the sudden passing of Derek Twomey RIP."

Dr Crokes said: "Sincere sympathy to Twomey family and Legion Gaa on the sudden passing of Derek. RIP."

Spa GAA commented: "Our condolences to the Twomey family and to all at Killarney Legion GAA on the sudden passing of Derek Twomey RIP."
