Kerry GAA in mourning after death of Barry Clifford

Kerry GAA is in mourning following the death of Barry Clifford.

Tributes have been pouring in for the popular Derrynane clubman, who passed away on Wednesday.

His club posted on Facebook: "It was with extreme sadness that we at Derrynane GAA club learned of the sudden death of Barry Clifford at Cork University Hospital.

"Barry was a huge part of our club as player, trainer, referee and committee member. He took huge pride in being chairperson of Bord na nÓg and he passionately coached and mentored all our underage.

"We would like to extend our deepest sympathies to his beloved wife Ann, his sons Jim and Tom, his mother Breda, his brothers Séamus, Dermot and Fergus, their families, Ann’s family the Drummond family in Sneem, and his extended family.

"You will be deeply missed by The Derrynane GAA community.

"Barry Rest In Peace."

Described as "a gentleman, a character and a really great neighbour", a number of GAA clubs also paid tribute to Barry.

Kenmare Shamrocks said: "On behalf of everyone associated with Kenmare Shamrocks GAA club, I would like to pass on our sincere condolences to the extended family of Barry Clifford. A wonderful clubman who will be sadly missed by all."

Kilgarvan added: "Kilgarvan Club extends deepest condolences to the family and friends of the late Barry Clifford Castlecove. Barry was a gentleman and a great friend of Kilgarvan club. A great GAA man."

Fossa GAA commented: "Fossa GAA club was saddened to hear of the passing of Barry Clifford Castlecove, brother of our chairman Dermot. Barry was a great friend of Fossa GAA club. Our condolences to the extended Clifford and Drummond families. Also to @DoireFhionanCLG who have lost a fantastic clubman."

A guard of honour will take place for Barry at White Strand on Friday at 4:45pm.
