Kerry GAA in mourning after death of 1962 All-Ireland winner Jerry O’Riordan

Kerry GAA are mourning the passing of All-Ireland winner Jerry O’Riordan.

The Glenbeigh-Glencar clubman was part of the Kingdom’s All-Ireland winning team in 1962 and died peacefully at his home on December 29.

O’Riordan won Mid-Kerry Championships with his Club in 1956, 1964, 1974 and 1975. He also won a County Championship with Mid-Kerry in 1967.

At county level the midfielder and occasional half-forward made 17 National League appearances between 1962 and 1965. He only played four Senior Football Championship games for Kerry but managed to claim Munster and All-Ireland medals.

He lined out in the 1962 final against Roscommon alongside the likes of Mick O’Connell, Tom Long, Johnny Culloty, Seamus Murphy and Tim ‘Tiger’ Lyons.

O’Riordan lived and worked in Limerick and his funeral will leave from Bruff on New Year’s Eve morning before his burial in his native Glenbeigh that afternoon.

Tributes poured in online for O’Riordan with one reading: “Sorry to hear the passing of Gerry, he was not alone a brilliant footballer but a true gentleman. May he rest in peace.”
