Offaly's dramatic fall from grace reached a new low today as a 1-18 to 1-16 defeat in Kerry consigned them to hurling’s third tier, the Christy Rig Cup.
After a disastrous first half in which they had Peter Geraghty sent off and missed a penalty, Offaly came in trailing 1-7 to 0-6.
A Shane Dooley goal brought the 1998 All-Ireland champions back into it but Kerry were full value for the victory with Shane Conway firing over 11 frees.
In the other game this afternoon, Eoin Gaughan’s two late frees earned Laois a 1-22 apiece draw with Westmeath in Portlaoise to set up a rematch in the Joe McDonagh Cup final in Croke Park in two weeks.
