KOCHI: IMD has issued a yellow alert for isolated heavy rainfall of 7-11cm in Ernakulam and Malappuram on Saturday. Similar warnings have been issued for Malappuram and Wayanad on Sunday.
Also, thunderstorms with lightning accompanied by gusty wind with speed reaching 30-40kmph is very likely to occur at one or two places in Kerala till May 3. It is said that this is because of the trough or winds over Peninsular India.
A cyclonic circulation is likely to form over the south Andaman Sea and neighbourhood over May 4. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the same region. Squally winds are likely over the Andaman Islands. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the southeast Bay of Bengal on May 4.
Temperatures were high in several districts, with Kannur, Kozhikode and Palakkad recording the highest maximum temperature of 37°C.
Meanwhile, Skymet weather said that Kerala has been witnessing good amounts of pre-monsoon activities so far. The state has received 77% of excess rains from March 1 to April 29. Rainfall activities are expected to continue in the coming week. These rains are in view of the oscillation of the wind discontinuity running from central parts to peninsular India.
The pre-monsoon rainfall has been good for the south peninsula. All pockets of south India, especially Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala, are in the nearly large excess rain category. Kerala had a 45% excess in March.
