KOCHI: Heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning lashed several places on Saturday evening as IMD had issued yellow alerts for several districts.
Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Malappuram and Wayanad were on alert for 7-11cm rainfall due to the influence of the cyclonic circulation in Sri Lanka region.
IMD said, thunderstorms with lightning accompanied by gusty wind, with speed reaching 30-40kmph, is very likely to occur at one or two places in Kerala from April 24-27.
According to 24-hour rainfall recorded on Saturday morning, Thiruvananthapuram and Ernakulam South received the highest of 5cm rainfall each. Kanjirappally, Irinjalakuda, Perumkadavila recorded 4cm rainfall each, while Neyyattinkara and Varkala, Kodungallur, Kudulu, Vellayani and Adakkaputhur received 3cm each.
Skymet weather said that due to multiple systems affecting various states, the pre-monsoon season has been strong across the country. Over the northern region, it was the western disturbance along with the induced cyclonic circulation. For eastern parts and northeast India, the anticyclone in the eastern parts was sending in a lot of southeasterly moist winds causing rains. For south India, it was the cyclonic circulation across the equatorial Indian Ocean resulting in rainfall activities.
