Kerala rains: Water level rises in Chalakkudy river, residents evacuated

KOCHI: As a precautionary measure, Thrissur district administration on Tuesday started evacuation of people from the banks of Chalakkudy river after the water level increased due to incessant rain.

Revenue officials have also opened a control room in Chalakkudy.

The water level in the river increased after water was released from the Parambikulam and Upper Sholayar dams.

Water level of Muvattupuzha river in Ernakulam is showing an increasing trend, said an official release. The water lever has already crossed the flood warning level.

Ernakulam district collector has asked the revenue officials to arrange camps to rehabilitate people in Puthenelikkara, Kunnukara and Chendamangalam, if case of an emergency.

Meanwhile, the state witnessed three deaths in the last 24 hours due to rain fury. Of the three deaths, two were kids from Malappuram. The kids died on Tuesday after a portion of the wall of their house fell on them while they were sleeping. The third death reported from Kollam district.
