Kerala-Rail: Protest in Nedumbassery

KOCHI: Residents in Nedumbassery police station limits protested against installing survey stones for the proposed SilverLine project on Monday.

The protest was reported at Neduvannoor when revenue and K-Rail officials reached the spot for survey. The proposed rail line passes through the compound of around eight houses in the area and the residents protested against the surveyors when they tried to install the survey stones.

Around 15 survey officials had reached the spot with the protection of 60 police personnel. The residents told the surveyors that farmers in the area relocated to Neduvannur after they had relinquished land for Cial. With the proposed project, they will again be relocated to some other place. The residents apprised the officials that they could not sell their land when needs like marriages arise, due to the survey stone installation.

Police warned the residents against disrupting the duty of the survey officials. When a local politician tried to obstruct the duty of the surveyors, police arrested him. No other case was registered by the police. Nedumbassery police said the arrest of one Shiju under section 154 of CrPC was a preventive one.

A similar protest was reported in Angamaly area last month when protesters removed survey stones in Parakkadavu.
