Kerala: Police arrest Kannur woman in fake income-tax raid case

KOCHI: Ernakulam Rural police, probing the daytime robbery in which the accused posed as income-tax officers, arrested one more accused in the case on Friday. The incident pertaining to the case happened on June 5 when the gang took around 300g of gold and Rs1.8 lakh in cash from an Aluva resident by posing as income-tax officers.

The arrested person was identified as Suhara (37) of Koothuparamba Kannur. Her husband Harris is an accused in the case and is on the run, police said. She was arrested for taking part in the conspiracy before the crime and for helping the other accused go into hiding.

On the day of the heist, the accused reached the victim’s house at 11am and ‘raided’ the house for nearly 90 minutes. They targeted a Maharashtra native who undertook gold ornament works. The gang told the house owner and his family not to make phone calls during the ‘raid’.

The accused also showed a fake identity card on their phones to make them believe that they were income-tax officers. They then searched the house, took ornaments, cash and other documents. The DVR of the CCTV system at his home was also stolen. Police found CCTV footage of the accused from the cameras in the area. They later found that the accused from Goa were also part of the gang. Police have already arrested three Goa natives and a Kannur native in connection with the case.
