Kerala: Now, bribery allegations surface in Calicut University

KOZHIKODE: After the Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU) was rocked by the suspension and arrest of an employee for accepting bribe from a student for issuing her provisional certificate, a similar corrupt practice has allegedly surfaced in the Calicut University (CU) as well.

CU has begun a probe into allegations that a varsity employee attached to the Pareeksha Bhavan has received cash payment from a student to his personal account via Google Pay, and that too far in excess of the fee stipulated by the varsity for the issuance of the certificate.

According to allegations, the employee has received Rs 5,000 from a former student of the varsity for processing her request for certificate issuance while the original fee for the request is not even half of the received amount.

Instead of asking the student, who had approached the official with the request to remit the correct amount to the varsity account, the employee asked the student to transfer a higher sum to his personal bank account.

The issue came to light when the varsity issued a notice to the student on finding discrepancy in the fee amount shown as remitted to the university for the certificate issuance.

According to sources, when the issue related to issuance of name change certificate was being investigated another malpractice has allegedly come out from the same section and two employees are now under the scanner.

"The varsity is looking into the complaint seriously and we have asked a report to be submitted on the matter. The university has a zero-tolerance policy towards financial corruption and strict action will be taken if anyone is found guilty," CU registrar E K Satheesh said.

The report from the section will be submitted to the registrar on Tuesday morning.
