Kerala: Navy sailor and civilian rescue woman who jumped from Venduruthy Bridge in Kochi

KOCHI: A-26 year-old woman, who jumped into the backwaters from Venduruthy Bridge on Sunday, was rescued by a Navy sailor and a civilian in a risky operation. The woman, a native of Alappuzha, jumped from the bridge around 1.30pm on Sunday.

A naval sailor, T Anantha Kumar ranked leading logistics (LLOG) at INS Garuda, who was passing by saw the woman jumping and along with a civilian male named Rajesh PG, who was also a passerby, jumped from the bridge without a second thought.

The sentries who were on duty at the security posts at the Kochi Naval Base on the bank of the backwaters saw the incident and they immediately alerted the control room. The control room officials immediately passed the information to the interceptor boat, which was patrolling in the area. The boat rushed to the spot within no time.

By that time, Kumar and Rajesh have caught hold of the lady. Using the lifebuoy thrown from the boat, they managed to get onboard. Post first aid at Naval hospital INHS Sanjivani, the lady has been shifted to a hospital in the city. Both rescuers are fine and have been discharged from hospital later.

“It is suspected to be a case of suicide attempt. The timely intervention of the sailor and the civilian saved her life. It was risky as there are strong undercurrents. The police have launched a probe and are collecting the details of the woman,” said a police officer.
