Kerala: Math wiz from Alappuzha sets Guinness record

KOCHI: Studying Math is challenging for many and most of them do it just for the sake of scoring marks in exams. However, learning Mathematics and playing with numbers has been a passion for Vivek Raj, an MBA graduate and Mathematics teacher from Alappuzha, since he was seven years old. And this passion for numbers has now enabled him to secure a place in the Guinness World Records.

Vivek was recognised by the Guinness World Records for the record of memorizing the longest number sequence in four seconds. In the blink of an eye, he viewed, memorized and recalled a 28-digit number. It is reportedly the first Guinness record from Kerala in ‘Number Memory Test’. Until now, the longest number sequence memorized in four seconds was a 27-digit number and the Guinness record was held by Morteza Javid Ahmad Abadi of Iran.

As per instructions from Guinness Book of World Records, the judges selected a 28-digit random number from a random number generator. In four seconds he read the number, memorized and recalled. The attempt was done at Leo XIII Higher Secondary School Auditorium in Alappuzha on Sunday, in the presence of DIG of prisons MK Vinod and several other dignitaries and mediapersons.

“Although the record attempt was successfully completed within 4 seconds, it took around 16 years of training to make it happen,” he said.

Vivek, an expert in Vedic Mathematics, also runs an educational centre ‘Vedic Math Monastery’ in Alappuzha district.
