Kerala: Man hacks wife to death at Piravom

KOCHI: In a shocking incident, a 62-year-old man hacked his wife, who was sleeping next to him, to death at their house at Piravom in the early hours of Friday.

Piravom police arrested the accused Bahulayan alias Babu (62), son of Narayanan of Kunnumpurath house, Mulakulam North on Friday morning. The victim, Shantha (56), died on the spot.

Police said the couple had gone to bed together. While she was asleep, the man used a machete to hack her on the neck and killed her. Officials said that there were no signs of an argument happened before the murder. The accused’s mother and son were in the first floor of the house and they did not even realize that the murder has happened, police said. Police said that the man confessed to the crime and prima facie it seemed like he committed the murder as he was suspicious of her.

“He had gone to his neighbours and admitted to them about the crime. Subsequently, the police were informed. He was at large for a while but soon he was arrested from the neighborhood itself,” said an officer with Piravom police.

Sources said that the murder came as a shock to everyone as no one expected him to commit a gruesome crime like this.

“The couple was seen going to the temple together on Thursday. People are finding it hard to believe that the murder took place at the house as there was no perceptible problems between them. However, the man seems to have harboured some kind of suspicion towards his wife and this seems to have made him commit the crime,” said an officer.
