Kerala logs over 8,500 new Covid cases

KOCHI: The state reported 8,538 new Covid-19 cases on Sun- day. While the overall active cases tally dropped to 77,363, of which 10% are presently admitted to hospitals the state’s Covid death figures continued to increase with 363 deaths added for the day.

This includes 71 deaths due to Covid that occurred in the past few days, 211 deaths that were not confirmed due to lack of adequate records up to June 18 and 81 deaths that were included as per the new guidelines of the Central government as per the SC judgment. This brings the total death toll in the state to 28,592.

The worst affected district continues to be Ernakulam, recording 1,481 new Covid cases, followed by Thiruvananthapuram (1,210), Thrissur (852), Kottayam (777), Kozhikode (679), Idukki (633), Kollam (554), Malappuram (430), Kannur (419), Palakkad (352), Pathanamthitta (348), Alappuzha (333), Wayanad (311) and Kasaragod (159).

As many as 79,100 samples were tested in the past 24 hours. The weekly-infection population ratio (WIPR) is above 10 in 211 wards of 158 local bodies. Strict regulations will be imposed in these areas.

Among the new cases, 32 who tested positive are from outside the state, 8,212 people were infected through contact and the source of infection for 252 people is not clear. The disease affected 42 health workers. The state has vaccinated 94.3 % of the population with the first dose and48 % with both the vaccine doses.
