Kerala: Hema commission report not published for privacy reasons, says minister

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Hema commission report on the problems faced by women in the cinema industry was not published as it contained personal testimony of some complainants, said minister for cinema Saji Cherian on Thursday.

Cherian said the report that contains personal accounts of women complainants cannot be released for public consumption. He informed MLA Najeeb Kanthapuram that Rs 1.06 crore was spent for the panel to complete its work.

Cherian said that the government was taking steps to implement key recommendations of the panel. It had suggested the promulgation of Cine Exhibitors and Employees Act and the setting up of a tribunal.

Some of the important recommendations are as follows. Penalise those engaged in attack against women, set up internal complaint committee to prevent sexual abuse, provide safe rooms for dress change, ensure pay parity, set up welfare fund for cine artists, insist minimum wages for junior artists, ensure provisions to grant leave for delivery and child care.
