Kerala: Five-year-old girl killed in wild elephant attack

THRISSUR: A five-year-old girl was killed, and her father and grandfather were injured in a wild elephant attack at Kannamkuzhi near Athirappilly on Monday evening.

The deceased was identified as Aagnimiya, daughter of Nikhil of Mala Puthenchira.

Nikhil and Agnimiya’s maternal grandfather Jayan were injured in the attack. They have been admitted to St James Hospital, Chalakudy. According to the hospital sources their condition is improving.

They had come from Mala to participate in the post-death rituals of a relative at Athirappilly. They were attacked while returning after a temple visit, on a bike.

Local residents said that the attack was by a lone tusker that strayed from the palm-tree estate. They alleged that the tusker was repeatedly straying into human habitations. They registered their protests against forest officials for not taking effective action to prevent wild elephant attacks.
