KOZHIKODE: A fire broke out at a godown on MP Road near SM Street, the commercial hub of the district headquarters town of Kozhikode in Kerala, at around 2.30pm on Friday.
Quick response from fire and rescue personnel along with local people ensured that the fire at the godown of a footwear shop at the VKM shopping complex was brought under control within one hour.
As many as six fire tenders from various fire stations helped douse the fire which broke out in the footwear godown.
No casualties or injuries have been reported.
The fire in the crowded shopping area created panic as there were many people in the shops and godowns.
Two women workers who were trapped inside the building were rescued by local shopkeepers before the arrival of the fire and rescue services personnel.
District police chief (Kozhikode city) said that the prompt action by the fire and rescue team as well as the police prevented the blaze from spreading to other buildings nearby.
PWD minister PA Mohammed Riyas who visited the area said that a report has been sought from the fire services department on the frequent fire instances in SM Street and nearby areas.
He added that the corporation and government departments will look into whether there have been any unscientific or illegal practices that had led to the fire.
