Kerala: Daily hospital admissions down to below 2,000

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The number of hospital admissions of Covid-19 patients in the state has come down to below 2,000 a day in the past one month, which experts term as an indication of the reducing disease burden. They point out that daily hospitalisations had touched even 4,000 in the state earlier and attributed the dip mainly to vaccination.

On Thursday, the state reported 22,182 cases from among 1,21,486 samples tested and 178 fatalities. The Union health ministry on Thursday noted that almost 68% Covid cases reported in India are from Kerala. The number of active cases is 1,86,190 now, of which 13.4% people have been admitted to hospitals and other quarantine facilities. Over 80% of the state's population aged above 18 years have got the first dose of vaccines while 32.6% have received both the doses.

The state government has stopped publishing the test positivity ratio (TPR) in its daily bulletin from Wednesday, based on recommendations of the expert committee. The committee had earlier recommended containment measures based on weekly infection population ratio (WIPR). It said the TPR does not show the exact infection rate among the population as testing is done mostly on symptomatic people.
