Kerala: Calicut University’s School of Drama students block teachers

THRISSUR: A group of students of Calicut University’s School of Drama (SoD) centre here have launched a blockade against teachers demanding action against three teachers, based on a complaint of a girl student.

The girl student alleged that one of the teachers, a visiting faculty, had beaten her in November, while another teacher, who is the dean, had gaslighted and emotionally manipulated her when she was in hospital after a suicide attempt. She also alleged that the head of SoD did not take any action even after orally complaining to him after the incident.

Trouble started during a meeting convened by School of Drama authorities to discuss various issues on the campus. Students first complained about the reported move to take action against some girl students for returning to the hostel at late hours. Subsequently, they raised the complaint of the girl student, and when students found no solution emerging, they said they will blockade the place and prevent faculty members from leaving.

Meanwhile, hostel warden Ambili she said the student had not given any complaint on the incident, which allegedly happened more than three months ago.

In the evening, CU authorities invited the agitating students to the university campus for talks. However, students said the authorities must come to the SoD campus for talks, and they will continue the agitation till then.
