KOCHI: The IMD, in its extended weather forecast, said rainfall will be below normal for the next two weeks. The northeast monsoon has come down this week.
In fact, in the week between December 9-15, there was a deficiency of 72%, a feature that has not been seen frequently in the last couple of months.
During the said week, out of 14 districts in Kerala, nine received large deficient rainfall. However, thanks to the high amount of rainfall received in October, November and December first week, Kerala recorded 112% large excess rainfall from Oct 1-Dec 18. The highest excess has been received in Pathanamthitta with 185%, followed by Kasaragod (142%) and Kozhikode (132%).
There are no rainfall warnings for the next two weeks. Weather agencies said that under the influence of existing cyclonic circulation over central parts of south Bay of Bengal, conditions are becoming favourable for the formation of a low-pressure area over the same region. Skymet weather said this weather system is expected to form in the next 24 hours over southeast Bay of Bengal in the proximity of the Bay Islands. Subsequently, it is likely to move northeastward towards south Andaman Sea.
