Kenya is packed full of wonders. Fantastic wildlife, spectacular beaches and coral reefs, isolated islands, deserts and mountains make the east African country a wonderfully unique place to visit. And there is no better time to explore: 2013 is the jubilee anniversary of the country's independence and there are plenty of events taking place across Kenya to celebrate.
Kenya boasts some of the most exciting and diverse safari experiences in the world within 54 national parks and reserves. Seeing the big five – lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino – roam parks such as the world-famous Masai Mara National Reserve is magnificent. Witnessing the annual migration of more than a million wildebeest from the Serengeti plains, however, is completely unforgettable.
And then there's the expansive coastline, often regarded as the heart of Kenya. Long before Nairobi was the capital of the country, it was Mombasa, Kenya's second-largest city, that was the centre of political affairs. Today, Mombasa Island continues to be the main point of arrival and remains a vibrant coastal hub packed with vendors selling their wares.
For a taste of Swahili culture, visit Mombasa's Arab-built old town. The cultural heritage is embodied by the architecture – centuries-old carved wooden door frames reveal Arabic, Gujarati and British designs. And don't miss the city's food market, a busy marketplace where locals stock up on cinnamon bark, cardamom and cumin, all popular ingredients in traditional Swahili cuisine.

If it's white-sand beaches, warm turquoise water and palm trees you're after, you won't be disappointed. Head to Diani Beach, 40km south of Mombasa, for a relaxed, casual resort that offers a great escape from the city. Or chill out in Watamu, which means "home of the sweet people" in Swahili. Watamu is an isolated coastal village only 150km north of Mombasa; its protected marine national park ensures crystal clear water and pristine white sand. Watamu Beach is one of the best in the country and a lot quieter than those that surround it.
It's also where endangered sea turtles nest several times a year and, if you're lucky, you might spot whale sharks or dolphins further out to sea. Whether on land or at sea, Kenya truly is the best place to experience the world's most magnificent wildlife.
