LEXINGTON, Ky. _ University of Kentucky women's basketball coach Matthew Mitchell is recovering after undergoing successful brain surgery.
According to a statement from UK Athletics spokesperson Evan Crane, Mitchell developed a condition called subdural hematoma _ which results in a buildup of blood on the brain _ after falling and sustaining a concussion in March. Mitchell and his family thought he had fully recovered from the concussion until two weeks ago when he went to the hospital after suffering from persistent headaches.
Doctors at the University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital discovered the condition and scheduled Mitchell's surgery.
"Coach Mitchell sustained a concussion in March. At the time, he believed he had recovered fully with rest and rehab. However, two weeks ago after experiencing a mild but persistent headache for an extended period of time, he sought medical attention," Crane said. "A subdural hematoma was discovered and he had successful surgery and is extremely appreciative of the excellent care he received at UK Chandler Hospital. He expects to fully recover."
Mitchell took over as Kentucky head coach in 2007 and has compiled an overall record of 303-133 with the Wildcats.
Kentucky went 22-8 overall this year before the season was prematurely halted because of the coronavirus pandemic. The Wildcats tied for third place in the Southeastern Conference regular-season standings with a record of 10-6 and were ranked No. 16 in the final Associated Press Top 25 Poll.
