Kentucky Wildcats honor late QB Jared Lorenzen during season opener

Former NFL quarterback and fan favorite Jared Lorenzen died in July after being in the hospital and dealing with an infection, kidney and heart issues. He was 38.

Lorenzen, also known as Hefty Lefty, played college football at Kentucky, where he threw for more than 10,000 yards in his four seasons and set several school and NCAA records. Despite not being drafted, he signed with the New York Giants in 2004 and won a Super Bowl ring as the backup in the 2007-08 season.

Football fans and former teammates were heartbroken to hear that Lorenzen died. And Saturday for the Wildcats’ 2019 season opener against Toledo, they paid tribute their former quarterback.

At halftime, the school’s marching band formed the number 22 on the field to honor Lorenzen, who wore that number on his way to becoming the program’s all-time leader in passing yards.

Lorenzen struggled with weight issues, particularly after his NFL career ended. But he was determined to be healthier and lost 100 pounds in a year.
