Kentucky (0-0) vs. Toledo (0-0) Game Preview
It’s the first ever meeting between the two teams, and it’s a dangerous game for a Kentucky team that needs to reload a little bit.
The Wildcats start its MAC schedule with a Toledo team good enough to win the conference, and it’s followed up by a tune-up against Eastern Michigan before dealing with the SEC opener against Florida.
This is the only game against a Power Five team for the Rockets, but it’s not the end of the tough non-conference battles with a trip to Colorado State coming up and a date with BYU.
It’s the first time the two programs have ever met.
Why Toledo Will Win
Will the Kentucky offense be able to keep up any sort of a pace? Star RB Benny Snell is gone, most of the top receivers are gone, the passing game was last in the SEC in yards per completion, and was 12th in the league in yards and scoring. If that wasn’t enough, three starters are gone up front.
But other than that, everything is great.
Once again, this an explosive Toledo attack that has a great group of tight ends to go along with a loaded backfield that might be the best in the MAC. The O that averaged more than 40 points per game has to be fantastic and hope the middling UK attack stays pedestrian, but …
Why Kentucky Will Win
The Toledo defense isn’t going to be anything special … again.
To be fair, opposing offenses needed to bomb away to try keeping up the pace, but the D really wasn’t that good. Now it’s going to be in for a rough start with six starters and most of the top tacklers are gone.
The Toledo line is going to be a strength, but if UK QB Terry Wilson can get hot early on with his midrange passes, he should be able to keep the chains moving.
Will Toledo still have a penalty problem? It got flagged way too often last year, and against Kentucky, being air-tight is a must. The Wildcats should once again take advantage of every opportunity.
What’s Going To Happen
Kentucky isn’t going to be as strong or as tough as it was last season, but it’s not going to be the type of team that will pull away fast and make things easy.
The Wildcats will be methodical, but it’ll go on enough consistent scoring margins to make the Rockets press. UK will force two key turnovers, score off of both of them, and come away with a nice opening day win – even if it’s not easy.
