Kentucky’s rates of domestic violence, sexual violence, and stalking is higher than the national average. In 2022 there were 14 domestic violence related homicides in Fayette County alone.
Diane Fleet is the associate director of Greenhouse 17. Her organization serves 17 counties in Kentucky and helps those dealing with abuse. Fleet said domestic violence can happen at any level.
“I think it is always critical that domestic violence can happen to anybody, any demographic, any age, any societal status, any financial status.”
She said due to their limited space, they try to help survivors find alternatives to going into a shelter.
“We might really at “Do you have another safe place to stay? If we get a protective order, would that make a difference? If we work with the city as far as lock changes and security systems, or we have some monies to be able to do that, would it be beneficial?” How can we keep you from even needing to come to shelter?”
Fleet said many of the people who come to her organization do not have a proper support network. Anyone experiencing any kind of domestic abuse can call the Greenhouse 17 crisis line at 800-544-2022.
