Kentucky Derby: How to make a mint julep

Race fans will drink an estimated 120,000 mint juleps this weekend at Churchill Downs Race Track in Louisville, Kentucky, and you can get into the spirit at home by making your own version on Derby day.

The standard drinks served at Churchill Downs use a ready-to-serve cocktail.

Via Kentucky Derby:

  • 3 oz. Old Forester Mint Julep
  • 0.75 oz. Simple Syrup
  • 8-10 mint leaves
  • 3 mint sprigs, far garnish

Churchill Downs also offers a special $1,000 mint julep that comes in a limited-edition silver and gold-plated cup, pictured above.

You can use the bourbon of your choice at home, and you’ll need a tool to muddle the mint leaves.

Via Food Network:

“Place the mint leaves in the bottom of an old-fashioned glass and top with the sugar. Muddle these together until the leaves begin to break down. Add a splash of seltzer water, fill the glass 3/4 full with crushed ice, and add the bourbon. Top with another splash of seltzer, stir, and garnish with a sprig of mint. Serve immediately.”

Drink responsibly, Derby fans.
