Kent ‘risks becoming toilet of England’ if no loos provided for lorry drivers before Brexit, activists warn

Lorry queues could lead to drivers using the bushes

Post-Brexit lorry queues could make Kent the “toilet of England,” activists have warned.

Kent's main roads and laybys are already littered with human waste, local Liberal Democrat councillor Mike Sole told The Guardian.

He believes that it has the potential to become a lot worse after the UK leaves the EU on December 31, with lorry drivers held up for hours in carparks and queues.

The Canterbury councillor warned that Kent risks becoming "the toilet of England" unless dedicated loos are provided.

“I’m worried Kent is becoming the toilet of England, not the garden of England", he said.

"And we’re all braced for it getting much much worse.”

A union representative for the lorry drivers said things could get "disgusting".

Unite regional official Phil Silkstone said: “It has got the potential to be disgusting,”

The government has promised to provide portable toilets to drivers in the event of long queues forming.

However Mr Silkstone warned that drivers needed proper facilities to prevent them from using hedegrows.

A Kent county council spokesman said waste clearance was the responsibility of district and borough councils.

He added: “Local partners are working together to plan a traffic management system that will best fit with sites available from the government for freight parking and checks.

"As part of that ongoing work, government has ensured there will be toilet provision for drivers at those sites around Kent.”
