Kent stabbing: Two men in serious condition after knife attack as large crowds gather on Leysdown beach

Two young men are in a serious condition after they were stabbed amid a large gathering on an Isle of Sheppey beach, Kent Police have said.

Kent Police said that officers responded to reports of an assault on two men on The Promenade in Leysdown at around 11.55pm on Thursday.

A 24-year-old man from London has been arrested on suspicion of assault causing grievous bodily harm and remains in custody, they added.

Earlier on Thursday evening, officers had been called to reports of a large number of people gathering in Leysdown.

Many people in the crowd had travelled from outside the area, police added.

Photos and footage showed crowds of people congregating on the beach.

The force attended the scene to remind people of the latest social distancing advice, but just before midnight reports came in that two people had been assaulted on The Promenade.

The two men, also both from London and aged in their 20s, were rushed to a hospital in the capital by the South East Coast Ambulance Service with injuries consistent with stab wounds.

Police said their injuries are described as serious but not life-threatening.

Officers are now appealing for information and witnesses.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Kent Police on 01795 419119, quoting reference 25-2132 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
