KANAZAWA -- A nighttime illumination event has transformed Kenrokuen garden in Kanazawa into an enchanting winter wonderland, presenting the garden's iconic snow-bearing boughs in a new golden light.
Often cited as one of the three great gardens of Japan, Kenrokuen is famed for its ancient Karasaki pine, whose graceful branches are wrapped in ropes each winter for extra support against the snow. Called "yukitsuri," the technique creates distinct conical shapes that appear to glow when illuminated by the nearly 65 spotlights which have been installed in the garden. About 185 paper lanterns have also been set up along the promenade, joining the garden's distinctive Kotoji stone lantern.
Kenrokuen will be illuminated from 5:30 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays through Feb. 27. Admission to the park will be free during this time.
