Nov. 19--A Wisconsin man was being held in Kenosha County jail on $500,000 bail Thursday after being charged in connection with one of two bank robberies in Waukegan last week.
Dale L. Smith, 48, of the 1800 block of 52nd Street in Kenosha, was arrested Wednesday and charged with financial institution robbery, robbery, burglary and theft, according to Waukegan police Cmdr. Joe Florip. FBI agents and Kenosha police officers were involved in the arrest at Smith's home, Florip said.
"We worked with the FBI and developed some leads and we were able to get a positive break in the case," he said.
Smith, who is awaiting an extradition hearing in Kenosha, is accused of robbing the Fifth Third Bank branch at 702 N. Green Bay Road around 11:30 a.m. Nov. 12 while wearing a Chicago Bears knit cap. A weapon was not displayed or mentioned during the robbery, police said, and the suspect took off with an undisclosed amount of money.
The previous night, Waukegan police responded to a bank robbery alarm at the nearby TCF Bank branch, 922 Green Bay Road.
A man wearing a plastic mask with a breathing tube implied he had a gun and demanded money, police said. That suspect -- described by police as a black man, about 30 years old, weighing more than 200 pounds and about 6 feet tall -- also made off with an undisclosed amount of money, police said. No arrests have been announced in that case.
