Kenny Goins joins Denver Nuggets for NBA Summer League

Kenny Goins is getting a much deserved shot at the NBA.

The Spartan shot-making legend has joined the Denver Nuggets to play in the NBA Summer League.

On the surface this seems to be similar to the arrangement Nick Ward has with the Atlanta Hawks. It has been reported that Matt McQuaid has actually signed with the Detroit Pistons, but semantics are often lost this time of year and nobody is really sure who has what type of deal that pays what type of money.

It’ll all sort itself out, but as it stands all three of Ward, McQuaid and Goins are going to get their first professional shot in the NBA Summer League. From there they will all hope to impress enough to earn a training camp invite and some type of G-League contract. The fact that McQuaid and Goins are in this position says a ton about them, because professional basketball didn’t seem like much of an option for either of them heading into their senior seasons.

Goins went from being a walk-on sitting on the bench to an inconsistent role player to a reliable starting power forward who can rebound and hit 3s. He shot 34% from deep his senior season, but shot 41% from three in Big Ten play. He averaged 8 points and 8 rebounds per game his senior season.

NBA Summer League starts Friday, July 5th in Las Vegas.
