Kenny Egan 'very lucky' to see 30 after battle with alcoholism

Olympic silver medallist Kenny Egan has opened up about the alcohol issues he experienced following his success at the Beijing Games.

The 39-year-old boxer turned politician recalled: “As long as I had someone to drink with, it didn’t matter and that was a problem.

"It spiralled out of control and after the binges I’d get back training but once competition was over, I’d get back into it again.”

Speaking on Sports Stories on Virgin Media Two last night, Egan said: “It took me 18 years to get to my peak and it took me two years to hit rock bottom.

“I don’t remember a lot of the time between 2008 and 2010, I turned into a horrible, horrible person. I’m very lucky that I got sobriety at 30 years of age.

“My mother was worried sick, I caused havoc in relationships that I’m not proud of but I’ve made amends to people that I could.”

Egan is now a Fine Gael councillor in Clondalkin, West Dublin, where he lives with wife Karen and daughter Kate.
