Kenny Dalglish speaks out on Jurgen Klopp and Steven Gerrard Liverpool manager theory

Sir Kenny Dalglish has weighed into the debate over whether Jurgen Klopp and Steven Gerrard signing new deals on the same day was a coincidence or not, with an emphatic response.

On Friday, Klopp signed an extension with the Reds until 2024 and Gerrard did the same thing at Rangers, leading many to speculate that the deals might be linked, with Gerrard primed to take over at Anfield after that point.

However, Dalglish says that is not necessarily the case, with too much time to elapse between now and then to make anything certain.

He told the Sunday Post: " Steven Gerrard signed a new contract that ties him to [Rangers] until 2024. But spare me the notion it all goes hand in hand for Steven to go to Anfield and replace Jurgen in five years' time.

"Listen, I know it's Christmas time and we all like a good fairy tale. However, nobody - including Jurgen, Steven, and me - can look five days into the future never mind four or five years.

"For anyone to suggest otherwise is putting two and two together and coming up with 222. So let's get back to reality."

Speculation over who will take over from Klopp when the German does depart the Reds will continue, with Gerrard likely to be one of the biggest candidates.

Klopp's assistant Pep Lijnders has also been linked with the role, while there are likely to be plenty more coaches under consideration.
