Kenny Dalglish reckons Steve Clarke could make a move to tempt Allan McGregor out of international retirement ahead of his Scotland squad announcement.
Clarke will name his preliminary 26-man pool for Euro 2020 on Wednesday ahead of pre-tournament friendlies against Holland in Portugal and Luxembourg.
McGregor won the last of his 42 caps for his country two-and-a-half years ago when he produced a stunning last-gasp save to preserve a 3-2 Nations League win over Israel at Hampden.
That helped secure a Euro 2020 play-off place which proved to be massive as Scotland went on to book their place at the Finals through that route.
McGregor has enjoyed one of his best ever seasons to help Rangers win their first title in a decade and was named SPFL Player of the Year.
And as Scotland’s standout eligible shot-stopper, legend Dalglish - who won a record 102 caps - reckons Clarke could sound out the 39-year-old.
Dalglish, 70, who had Clarke as his first team coach in his second spell as Liverpool boss, told the Sunday Post : “Could there be a twist in the tail, and a late shout for Allan McGregor, as some have been calling for?
“The Rangers keeper has been outstanding this season, and is one of the best in the business.
“However, this first question to be answered is whether McGregor wants to be involved in the squad?
“It was his decision to retire from the Scotland team. I always thought it was down to the international team to retire you.
“That aside, if Steve does have an inclination to sound out McGregor, it would need to be done in private.
“Then you need to decide if it is fair on the three other keepers to look to bring someone else in? That definitely has to be taken into consideration.
“At the moment, David Marshall, Craig Gordon and Jon McLaughlin have been the men battling it out to be between the sticks.
“David has been in a struggling Derby County side this season, Craig has been playing in the Championship with Hearts, while Jon has largely been on the Rangers bench.
“Even though UEFA increased the squad size to 26 places, it doesn’t mean Steve is not going to have one or two headaches in the next couple of days.”
