Kenny Dalglish insists Rangers' title success was no excuse for Glasgow 'mayhem' witnessed last week

Kenny Dalglish insists Rangers ’ title success was no excuse for the “mayhem” that unfolded in Glasgow afterwards.

But the Celtic hero doesn’t believe it should overshadow a sensational league season for Steven Gerrard and his players.

The Gers picked up the Scottish Premiership trophy after a final day 4-0 thumping of Aberdeen at Ibrox.

Thousands of fans descended on the stadium and the city centre afterwards, and there were scenes of drunken violence as supporters clashed with each other.

Dalglish believes alcohol was the main protagonist but was keen not to take the focus away from the achievements of his fellow Liverpool legend.

He wrote in his Sunday Post column: “Success leads to celebration. Celebration leads to alcohol being taken. Alcohol consumption can lead to poor behaviour.

“That’s what happened with a few of the Rangers fans, and it led to people getting injured and acts of vandalism.

“It’s just not acceptable. Celebrating a title success should never be an excuse for mayhem.

“The scenes in and around Glasgow’s George Square were unfortunate and regrettable.

“It’s never pleasant to see some people behaving in such a manner. But it doesn’t take the shine away from what was achieved by the club on the park over the course of the campaign.

“Steven and his squad enjoyed their moment after they defeated Aberdeen 4-0 at Ibrox. It rounded off a brilliant nine months for them in the Premiership and in Europe, the only disappointment being that they never added a domestic cup to make it a double.”

Dalglish now predicts a busy summer for Gerrard as he reinforced his squad for a title defence.

He added: “Steven’s phone will still be red-hot, and he’ll still be working closely with the board and Ross Wilson on a daily basis.

“They will be determined to build on this season and keep the success going.”
