Kenny Dalglish hails Celtic development as legend pinpoints 'strange' Lisbon Lions factor

Kenny Dalglish reckons Celtic gave him the best football grounding available as his 1967 arrival at the club meant he learned from the feet of legends.

Jock Stein had led the Hoops to become the first British side to win the European Cup when they defeated Inter Milan 2-1 in Lisbon.

Coming through in a talented batch of youngsters that included the likes of Davie Hay, Danny McGrain, Lou Macari and George Connolly, the group came to be named the Quality Street Gang.

They eventually joined or usurped the aging European Champions in the first team but the man that came to be known as King Kenny was taken aback by how humble the legendary players were.

And Dalglish paid tribute to the respect and encouragement they showed young stars coming through the youth system.

He told the Off the Ball : "You could not have picked a better club to go to than Celtic because of the success they had, European champions in 1967 and we were going up to training just after that."

He added: "We were not in the dressing room, we were next door. We were in the reserve dressing room as usual.

"To a man, the Lisbon Lions were brilliant. They were really humble.

"When you played in the games or played in small-sided games, all they did was encourage you. They were fantastic, to be honest.

"They were closer to the younger players then and I think that helped as well.

"You were respectful, you could annoy them but they gave you respect too in a strange way."
