While at Cambridge University, Clarke became politically active and joined the Conservative Party.

In June 1970, at the age of 29, he became MP for the East Midlands constituency of Rushcliffe. In 1972 he was appointed a Government whip, and served as such until 1974, when this portrait was taken.

In 1988, despite his love of beer and cigars, Clarke was appointed Health Secretary. He took on the consultants and the fabric of the NHS. He was not popular with these nurses photographed at Heathrow on 14 August 1988.

Ken's political persona was at loggerheads with his private life, his love of ornithology and jazz.

Ken was against Margaret Thatcher's appointment in 1975 and they had an uneasy relationship. In 1990, when this photograph of the Cabinet was taken, Ken, then Education secretary, was the first Minister to tell Thatcher that she should resign. In her memoirs she said of the conversation
