Release date for Kenneth Branagh's 'Belfast' film revealed - and where to watch
Kenneth Branagh's upcoming film 'Belfast' is set to hit the big screen later this year.
The movie's trailer was released recently, giving us a glimpse into the semi-autobiographical film following Branagh's upbringing in the city at the dawn of The Troubles in the late 1960s.
A star studded line-up is expected, with Northern Irish actors Jamie Dornan and Ciarán Hinds joining Judi Dench, Caitriona Balfe, and newcomer Jude Hill.
At the centre of the film is Buddy, a young boy on the cusp of adolescence, whose life is filled with familial love, childhood hijinks and a blossoming romance.
With his beloved hometown caught up in increasing turmoil, his family faces a momentous choice - hope the conflict will pass or leave everything they know behind for a new life.
Balfe and Dornan play the boy's "glamorous, working-class" parents, with Dench and Ciarán Hinds playing his grandparents.
Filming for Belfast took place in the city last summer, with daily Covid testing, cast bubbles and vigilance from everyone involved - with 50 percent of the scenes taking place outdoors.
Speaking virtually to film students at the QFT last year as part of the Belfast Media Festival, Branagh said: “It’s a very personal film, set partly in Belfast and partly elsewhere, partly set in the past and partly set in the present.
"I hope that there is humour and I hope that it’s emotional. It’s a look at a people and a place in tumult through the eyes of a nine-year old movie-mad kid."
When is 'Belfast' set to be released?
The film had its world premiere at Telluride Film Festival on September 2 and will also be shown at Toronto Film Festival on September 12.
