Kenmare flooded and scenic Ring of Kerry road 'impassable' after heavy rain

A popular Irish tourist town is partially underwater and roads are "impassable" due to heavy flooding in Co Kerry.

The Square in the town of Kenmare was flooded with fire crews arriving at 5am to pump away the water.

Motorists are advised to take alternative routes.

Kerry County Council tweeted: "Because of flooding locally, there will be a delay in opening the Kenmare Civic Amenity Site this morning. We will have the facility open as soon as it is safe to do so."

And the N70 road on the scenic Ring of Kerry is "impassable" between Sneem and Caherdaniel due to the severe rainfall.

AA Roadwatch said: "Further along on this route, the road is also impassable between Cahersiveen and Waterville at Inny Bridge."

The national forecaster revealed today a staggering 54.5mm of rain drenched Valentia in Kerry with 34mm recorded at Sherkin Island in Cork.

But it's still some way off the rainiest July day on record since 1942. On July 23, 2005, a staggering 112.9mm of rain was recorded in Macroom, Co Cork, according to Met Eireann.
