Kendrick Lamar to receive key to the city of Compton

Jan. 15--Last year, Kendrick Lamar wrote a love letter to Compton through his music video "King Kunta," featuring the rapper and his friends dancing through his hometown. Next month, his love letter will be answered -- with a key to the city.

Lamar, born in Compton, will receive the key to the city on Feb. 13 in a special ceremony, Compton Mayor Aja Brown announced on Twitter on Thursday. The 28-year-old rapper is well-knowing for paying serious homage to his roots.

"He represents Compton with great pride and I am honored to present him with the Key to the City, which symbolizes our deep appreciation for his philanthropic work and commitment to our community," the mayor said in a prepared statement. "Mr. Lamar's achievements further Compton's legacy of ingenuity and excellence."

Lamar attended Centennial High School in Compton as a teenager, where he was a straight-A student, according to city officials. Last year, he served as the 63rd grand marshal of the Compton Christmas Parade.

Lamar tweeted back his appreciation to Brown, including the phrase "HUBLUV," referencing Compton's "Hub City" nickname for its central location within Los Angeles County.

Lamar's "Kunta" music video was filled with scenes from the city, including the Compton Swap Meet, also known as the Compton Fashion Center.

"Kendrick Lamar is one of Compton's greatest ambassadors," said Councilmember Janna Zurita. "We in Compton are proud of him because he is a symbol of what our city really is -- a place where dreams can come true."
