For the first time Kendrick Lamar will headline Australian shows , following the release of his 2015 album, To Pimp a Butterfly.

The album topped the Guardian’s best albums of 2015 list, and scored the same coveted spot in The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Vice and Pitchfork.

The rapper began his music career at 16 under the moniker K-dot, releasing his first full-length mixtape in 2003. Nine years and two albums later, his breakthrough Good Kid, Maad City was critically acclaimed, debuting at number two in the US. It was heralded as a coming-of-age album, tracking his growth from teenage gangsta to clean-living penitent.

In addition to releasing his third album in 2015, Lamar won best MTV video of the year for his collaboration with Taylor Swift. He scored 11 Grammy nominations for 2016, the most received by any artist since Michael Jackson in 1984.

And while the Compton rapper’s lyrics are celebrated globally, they are also used to teach New Jersey high school students about the dichotomy of black culture in America.
