Ken Shimura, veteran comedian, dies after infection with new coronavirus

Veteran comedian Ken Shimura died Sunday night of pneumonia after being infected with the new coronavirus. He was 70.

Shimura was on many TV shows with the comedy troupe The Drifters, starring in the hit program "Hachiji da yo! Zen-in shugo" (It's 8 o'clock! Everyone get together) from 1969 to 1985.

According to Shimura's management agency, he started feeling ill on March 17 and showed symptoms such as a fever and breathing difficulties from March 19. He was staying at home but was sent to a Tokyo hospital on March 20 and hospitalized after being diagnosed with severe pneumonia. He tested positive for the new coronavirus on March 23.

Shimura was born in Higashi-Murayama, western Tokyo.
