Ken Jeong insists The Masked Singer UK can have similar success to the US version

The Masked Singer judge Ken Jeong has insisted the British version could enjoy similar success to the American one, which debuted last year.

The Hangover actor has appeared as a judge on the Stateside edition of the singing competition since it first aired in January 2019.

Now the 50-year-old is joining Jonathan Ross, Davina McCall and Rita Ora on the judging panel as the UK version airs for the first time on ITV on Saturday, January 4.

Taking its cues from The King Of Mask Singer, the South Korean singing competition launched in 2015, the British version will see 12 celebrities hide behind elaborate masks to conceal their identities during performances.

Their aim is to be the last masked singer standing as the judges try to figure out who they really are.

When asked by Standard Online if he thought his experience with two seasons in America would make him a better judge in the UK, Jeong seemed fairly confident.

He said: “I think, absolutely. I think I brought a level of experience and part of that experience is having the energy and fun that goes into just enjoying the show and the process of it.

“And that’s what surprised me - it’s strikingly similar. I have the same mindset in approaching who I think it is.

“It’s exactly the same. It’s a testament to the strength of this very simple format.”

Speaking ahead of the show's launch, host Joel Dommett explained how he felt like had a different experience to the show than the judges because “the only person that gets that close really”.

After each performance, Dommett interviews the celebs - who are still masked - and normally got a closer look even though their voices were also digitally distorted while they were speaking.

He told Standard Online: “It is very strange because sometimes I get to see a bit of a nose.”

The judges and Dommett were left out of the loop while the episodes were recorded, with approximately six members of production aware of their true identities.

The presenter did point out that viewers should not be fooled by the accents the participants use to sing or speak with.

He teased: “There is one in this episode [episode one], maybe two of them, they are definitely putting on an accent in their singing voice and their talking voice.

“There is one in particular who I am really good friends with and it took me - I got it in the end - but it was half the episode and I had no idea. I’m stood there and I am literally holding their hands and I have no idea who it is”

Ross told Standard Online he believed Simon Cowell would be “kicking” himself that he didn’t think of this “big fun family show”.

Viewers will meet Butterfly, Hedgehog, Pharoah, Tree, Unicorn, Fox, Monster, Chameleon, Daisy, Octopus, Duck and Queen Bee.

The Masked Singer has 12 characters and viewers will only know them by their character name until they are unmasked.

The Masked Singer launches on Saturday 4 January 2020 on ITV.
