Ken Doherty loses to Lee Walker in World Championship qualifying

Ken Doherty will not play at this year's World Championship after losing 6-4 to Lee Walker in a first round qualifier.

The Dubliner led 4-1, but then lost five consecutive frames to the Welshman to bow out.

The match, which started at 9.30am on Tuesday, went on for so long that it had to be suspended at 2pm to allow the afternoon session to get underway.

It resumed in the evening, with Walker winning the final frame 70-50.

Meanwhile, Rebecca Kenna’s hopes of reaching the World Championship were ended by Brandon Sargeant in the first qualifying round.

One of only two women to be granted a place in qualifying, 32-year-old Kenna gave Sargeant a scare before suffering a narrow 6-4 loss in Sheffield.

Women’s world number four Kenna took the first frame after she kept her cool to pot the black in a nervy opener.

When Sargeant hit back to level in the next frame, it was a sign of things to come in a tense, back and forth match.

The pair continued to trade blows with Kenna, who saw Reanne Evans exit the competition on Monday, holding the highest score of 68 until eventually a half-century break occurred.

It went to Sargeant and he fell 12 short of a century break but was able to ensure it was all square after six frames.

Kenna edged 4-3 ahead, but Sargeant hit back to reel off three frames in a row and set up a tie with Andrew Higginson.
